Guides and documentation for Apogee Reader, the iOS app for self-hosted BookOrbit libraries: audiobooks, ebooks, comics and PDFs.

Apogee runs on iOS 18 and later. On iOS 18 the app draws with solid buttons, menus and bars instead of glass.

Getting started

Section titled “Getting started”
  • Signing in: connecting Apogee to your BookOrbit server, and fixing the sign-in failures people hit most. Two addresses for one server, the Local Network permission, Tailscale, Cloudflare Access.
  • Importing books: add books from the Share Sheet, update a book in place, send one to a CrossPoint e-ink reader.
  • Fanfic: generated covers with the chapter count, updating a fic with new chapters, Source URL, Fandom and Chapters filled in from the file, and Fanfic Updates: chapter tracking from your AO3 subscriptions.

  • Home, Library, and Browse: shelves, the Queue, series, collections, search, metadata editing, Reading Stats, widgets.
  • Audiobooks: the player, chapters, exact resume, offline playback, the listening log.
  • Reading ebooks: paged or scrolled, themes and fonts, Read Aloud, Up Next.
  • Reader menus, themes and page settings: every option in Themes & Settings, the reader menus, and the built-in and custom themes.
  • Comics and PDFs: webtoon mode, Smart Zoom, colour filters, PDF highlights.
  • Downloads and offline: downloading, auto-download, and what works with no connection (nearly everything).
  • CrossPoint: send books to an XTEINK X4/X3 running CrossPoint firmware, with reading progress synced both ways, covers drawn for e-ink, a collection that sends itself, and books filed by series.
  • Notes and highlights: highlighting, note threads, sync status, and how notes survive a re-import.
  • Settings: everything in Settings, screen by screen.

Make it yours

Section titled “Make it yours”

Settings, then Appearance: pick the app’s accent colour from 18 presets that match the BookOrbit web themes. The colour reaches the tab bar, buttons, progress bars, the reader’s links, the Home Screen widget and the Lock Screen Live Activity.
